About the Performer

Gary Weisenburg brings to his gigs over thirty years of performing experience. With early training in classical trumpet, he soon discovered a love for folk, rock and roll, and jazz music, forming his first band at thirteen.

Having played on commercials and recording projects he became known for his bass playing as well as his original lead and harmony vocal abilities.

He is also recognized as a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger from his performing and recording associations with many Michigan area artists such as Neil Woodward, Matt Watroba, and Robert Jones.

You can currently enjoy Gary performing his own music as a soloist, as well as with other musicians in two to six piece bands.

Gary feels blessed to have music in his life and that “after all these years I’m still enjoying sharing my music and keeping live music alive.”

Got Talent? Showcase

3rd Annual Got Talent? Competition is back!

Who will be the 15 acts that perform LIVE at the Final Show?

The Got Talent Competition was created to give K-12 youth who are interested in the performing arts an opportunity to experience a professional audition and a final show. Each student that auditions is given feed back during the audition process by the judges that are professionals in various fields in the performing arts such as musicians, talent agents, dancers, theatrical performers and music producers. The event is set in three stages: The Call for Talent (open auditions) the Semi Finals (or call back) and the Final Show. The winner of the final show is given a cash prize of $1000 (sponsored by Genisys Credit Union) in order to help them move forward in their future performance career. In addition there are three category winners that receive $100 gift cards also supplied by Genisys.

Created and Presented by The Huron Valley Council for the Arts (HVCA), Huron Valley Recreation and Community Education (HVRCE), with support from Milford Music, Genisys Credit Union, Aladdin Print and Image Center and other area businesses. We have collaborated to create the third annual Got Talent? Showcase. The free Friday Night Live concert series continues July 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. in downtown Milford with bugs Beddow band serving up a unique, danceable blend of rhythm and blues, soul, funk and blues sounds.

Doug Beddow, aka bugs Beddow, sings and plays both the trombone and the flute. He is an experienced musician and music teacher who’s been performing for more than 30 years. His band has won best R&B Band at the Detroit music awards five times.

“We will be performing Trombone Driven R & B Funk music,” says Beddow. “One of the songs to be performed is a Tower of Power composition called Soul with a Capital S.”

His life’s work can be summed up in a quote by President Woodrow Wilson: “We are not here to merely make a living. We are here to enrich the world, and we impoverish ourselves if we forget this errand.”

Beddow is a certified music teacher who has earned his degree in music education from Northern Michigan University and continuing education credits from Madonna University. He served as the band director of Highland Middle School during the 2009-2010 school year.

Other members of bugs Beddow band include Bing Burris on guitar/vocals, Tim Freeman on drums/vocals, Michele Hobbs on bass/vocals and Robert Reeves on saxophones.

Garik Pedersen, Steinway Pianist

Pianist Garik Pedersen closes out the Huron Valley Council for the Arts’ 2011 Classical Series with a varied piano repertoire Saturday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. at HVCA, 205 W. Livingston Road in Highland.

Although I play a broad ‘swath’ of the piano repertoire, I feel a responsibility to include new music (by living composers) on my programs,” said Pedersen, a Steinway artist who recently celebrated 20 years as professor of piano at Eastern Michigan University. “The piano repertoire of the 18th and 19th-centuries is in the repertoire today because someone championed it and gave it life and breath.  I would like to do my part to give the same chance to at least a few pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries.

His program includes two early piano pieces by Franz Schubert, David Guion’s Mother Goose Suite, Three Hi-Tech Etudes by Dan Welcher, and Toccata-Fantasy by Joseph Gurt.

“The only thing these pieces have in common is that none of them are well-known, but I believe they are all attractive and the audience will enjoy them,” added Pedersen. “The Mother Goose pieces are transcriptions of nursery songs (some of which are still familiar) by a fascinating composer who lived in Texas.  The etudes describe frustrations that some of us have experienced adjusting to technical advances, and the Toccata-Fantasy is a brand-new piece written for me by a dear friend.”

As a Steinway artist, he has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and in Europe, Canada, Central America, Taiwan and the Philippine Islands. His recent appearances have included Steinway Hall in New York City (2008), the 2010 Cleveland International Music Festival, Michigan’s Gilmore Festival (2010), and the 2010 Isidor Bajic Music School in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Compañeros de Flamenco

April 17, 2010 7:30 pm

Tickets:
$10 General Public
$8   HVCA members, Seniors, Students

Companeros de Flamenco, a small, collaborative flamenco group, the fourth and final classical series, performs at Huron Valley Council for the Arts (HVCA), 205
W. Livingston in Highland, at 7:30 p.m. April 17.

“…Shouts of affirmation and encouragement resound as the passionate music and dance of Spain, Flamenco, is performed,” said dancer Holly Matthews. “Companeros de Flamenco is a group of dancers, singers, and musicians that bring this vibrant culture to life.”

In addition to Matthews, the group’s founding members include Guillermo “Bill” Doub, guitarist, and Michelle Millman, another dancer.

Doub’s experience includes 22 years as rhythm guitarist for Maria del Carmen’s Grupo España until Carmen’s death in 2004. He brings to light Moorish-Arabic and Carribean influence on the music as well as its traditional form. His family is from El Salvador and he grew up in San Francisco, which has a rich tradition of Spanish and Flamenco culture.

Matthews started her study of Flamenco dance with esteemed performer/teacher Yaelisa in San Francisco, and has continued to study with many international Flamenco artists. She has been a choreographer or dance teacher in diverse locales such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Ohio, Canada and Michigan, where she currently teaches flamenco dance in Farmington and Ann Arbor. Matthews studied classical piano at Interlochen Arts Academy, earned a MFA in dance and is a visiting dance lecturer at Eastern Michigan University. She recently started studying the Spanish mandolin.

Millman, who has danced most of her life, worked as a dancer, teacher and choreographer, earned a B.S. degree at the University of Michigan and a M.F.A. in dance from New York University. She was a member of the Festival Dancers and Grupo España. She studied Flamenco dance for around 20 years with Maria del Carmen and Karen Ostrovitz.

Matthews added, “The colorful costumes, the compelling guitar music, and the intricate footwork tell the story of Spain's multicultural heritage. The strong influences of the Gypsy, African, and Hebrew cultures are evident in dances like: Alegrias, Bulerias, Tangos, and Siquiriyas. Companeros de Flamenco is a flexible group that will entertain and enlighten.”

New Tattoo featuring Alan Smith

‘NEW TATTOO’ GROUP CLOSES OUT FREE FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE SERIES

Respected musician Allan Smith is coming to Milford with a fresh, yet retro sound with his brand-new band, New Tattoo, to close out the popular, free Friday Night Live music series from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 in Milford’s downtown gazebo in Main Street’s City Center Park.

Smith’s brand of 60s and 70s style folk is a breath of fresh air, compared with other similar music that seems to want to emulate what his witty and refreshing lyrics have bestowed upon many pleased musical connoisseurs and aficionados. He has played overseas and across the country as well as locally in the Huron Valley area.

“Music has a way of bypassing our defenses,” he says. “My favorite art form is taking a single idea or thought and expressing it in a four minute song that can be heard in the heart, not just in the mind.”

The other members of New Tattoo are two multi-talented musicians, Ron Boyd and Christina Miller, who perform everything from exquisite guitar mastery to vocals to ukulele.  New Tattoo will perform some of Smith’s original songs as well rock, blues and folk covers.  Home in Michigan, a new original that will be performed by the group that night, is always a crowd pleaser. So come to Downtown Gazebo for a night of fun-filled music, art and fun for the whole family.

In addition to the musical performance, those watching New Tattoo can see local artists giving live demonstrations of their work.

Note that if the weather is inclement, the concert will be moved to nearby Milford Presbyterian Church; a decision will be made by 6 p.m.
