Richard's Paintings, extending over a period of his lifetime from school to the present, can be seen at galleries in the United States. As a retired graphic designer, he has a strong sense of graphic design whcih is evident in his paintings. The experience as a graphic designer for a major corporation gave him the opportunity to work with a staff on corporate identification programs, some of which received national recognition. He has been a recipient of awards as an artist and graphic designer. One notable award as a graphic designer was a flag design for the "New Glory" flag design contest sponsored by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. It was exhibited at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. and toured the United States in the Smithsonian Sites Program.

A major graphic design project was for the city of Battle Creek. It consisted of a symbol and a manual for it's applications. The symbol is currently displayed on various city vehicles, banners, literature and street signs.
Requests for his services have come from cities, villages, townships, schools and private businesses.
