Collage with Abandon

Saturday, January 25
9 am - 3 pm

Explore two approaches to fiber collage with Mary Bajcz.   Mary learned a lot of the techniques she uses studying with the artist Albert Cote.

We will be working on a base of Stabil Batt, a product thatís half stabilizer and half batt.   This base allows you to do both hand and machine embroidery/stitching without a hoop. And an extra bonus: you donít have to be neat because the back of your work will be covered with another piece of fabric after all your stitching is done.

We will explore a collage process with larger pieces of interesting fabric and another process in which smaller pieces are covered with tulle netting to facilitate machine stitching.

The class fee will include a yard of 18Ē wide Stabil Batt, a half yard of Misty Fuse, tulle, and assorted fibers and fabrics that students can use.

Students are encouraged to bring fiber scraps, yarns, laces, sequined fabrics, fancy ribbons and other treasures from their stashes to use in their collage work.  One consideration: If students want to do a lot of hand stitching, they should make sure to test the fabric/ thread combination to make sure itís easy to pull the threaded needle through the fabric.

Supply list:

Sewing machine and supplies for free-motion stitching (needed for the collage technique in which small pieces of fiber are placed under tulle)

Basic sewing supplies:   scissors, thread, needles, pins, thimbles...

Embroidery floss or pearl cotton and appropriately sized needles    Iíll be bringing some of this for students to use too.
