TIM SCOTT: New Sightings
As a youth, my free time was spent either outdoors exploring a large forest behind my house, or exploring virtual worlds playing video games in my living room. After years of the general information overload of modern life, the expansive feeling of exploration is even more important to me. I explore southeast Michigan for reference images, and transform urban landscapes into calming scenes intended to create space for introspection. Creating surreal landscapes is a form of nostalgic escapism for me, while simultaneously trying to make sense of our infinitely complex world. Every building has a story to tell and every structure interacts with its environment in untold ways. I hope a playful sense of curiosity comes through in my abstracted landscapes.
Description of Exhibit:
New Sightings is about exploring everyday places and seeing them in a new way. Common public spaces, from schools to post offices, are elevated through abstraction, surreal colors, and simply by being presented in a gallery setting. The ghosts are a recent addition to my work, and serve to make the mystery more overt.
I’m an artist, designer, and over-thinker based in Ypsilanti, and I turn suburban infrastructure into calming compositions with lovely pastel colors. I studied film at Lansing Community College and printmaking at Eastern Michigan University. After years of dabbling with various media, from detailed ink drawings to digital glitch art, I now create digital illustrations and acrylic paintings on canvas. I’m interested in sociology, nature, digital spaces, spirituality, and exploring the relationships between those things. I love reading, hiking, and watching documentaries.
In 2020, with an abundance of free time and stress, both brought on by the global pandemic, I started painting with acrylics for the first time. Painting on canvas fulfills me in a different way than my digital art practice. I began entering art shows in 2021, and have exhibited online and in-person in multiple states, and won multiple honorable mentions in juried shows.
